BOSTON —A retired Cambridge police officer was arrested in connection to a hit-and-run on Massachusetts Avenue in Boston that critically injured a man Wednesday morning, police said.
Lawrence Stead, 69, of Quincy, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident causing personal injury. He has since been released on $10,000 bond.
Cambridge police said Stead retired from the force in 2009.
Police had issued a bulletin for a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis, which they said was located in Quincy several hours after the crash.
Neighbors of Stead said they were surprised of his arrest.
“He’s a really nice guy,” neighbor Salvatrice Doyle said. “I would never think he’d do that.”
The unidentified victim, who is said to be in his 50s or 60s, was listed in critical condition and was undergoing surgery at Boston Medical Center.
Stead is expected in Boston Municipal Court Thursday.
