RI cyclist killed in Cape Cod crash, 3 others injured

SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. — A motorcycle crash on Cape Cod has left a local family grieving for one loved one – and praying for his daughter’s recovery – while his brother saw it happen and was hurt, too.

Bruce Fernandes of Pascoag was killed when he hit a curb while taking a turn early Friday morning in Yarmouth, where he was vacationing. The crash took place around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Route 28 and Old Main Street.

“He was all about his daughter and his wife,” said Kathy Fernandes, Bruce’s sister-in-law.

His 24-year-old daughter, Brittany, was riding on the back of the bike and suffered serious injuries to her head and legs.

Kathy, who is speaking for the family, spoke to NBC 10 News.

“Our main concerns are with Brittany right now,” she said. “(We’re) hoping that everything’s going to turn out well for her.” {}

Brittany’s mother, Jen, is at her daughter’s bedside at a Boston hospital.

“She doesn’t know about her dad,” Kathy said. “So, it’s going to be very tough for Jen.{} She’s got to be strong for everybody right now.{} Because she’s got a daughter that’s in tough shape and she’s lost her husband.”

Bruce owned Henri’s automotive shop in Woonsocket.

“I don’t think there’s too many people that who would have a bad word to say (about him) because he’s just a great guy,” Kathy said.

Bruce’s brother, Scott, was riding another motorcycle right behind him when the crash happened. He crashed, as well.

Scott and his passenger, who is a friend of Brittany’s, were hurt but are out of the hospital.

“Scott’s in rough shape, too,” Kathy said.{}”He was banged up.{} And obviously he’s so traumatized over losing his brother that just can’t cope right now.”
