State Police Investigate Fatal Crash After Car Plunged From Route1 in Chelsea

Today at 2:48 a.m., troopers at the State Police Barracks in Revere responded to a call about a vehicle operating erratically on Route 1 northbound in Chelsea.  The witness also stated that it appeared the vehicle had gone off the roadway.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Mark Gajewski indicates that the 2006 Cadillac CTS failed to negotiate a curve, went airborne over a barrier and left the roadway, which is elevated in that area. The car fell 34 feet onto Sixth Street in Chelsea.

The car had three occupants; one of them, passenger Khang Luu, 22, of Chelsea was transported by Chelsea EMS to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver, JOSE FUENTES, 24, of Chelsea, was arrested by Chelsea police for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. The State Police investigation suggests speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors in the crash and possible associated charges will be determined at a later point.

The other passenger in the vehicle, Eddy Villanueva, 22, of Chelsea, was not injured.

The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit.
Troopers were also assisted at the scene by the Chelsea Police and Fire Departments.

The right lane of Route 1 was closed at 6:57 a.m. and remains closed at this time while the investigation continues.
