Video: Taxi crashes into pizza shop in Springfield’s Upper Hill neighborhood

SPRINGFIELD Mass. (WWLP) – A taxi collided with a fast food restaurant in Springfield’s Upper Hill neighborhood Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The cab smashed into the New York Fried Chicken and Pizza shop at 1135 State Street. The driver was okay and the pizza shop manager, luckily, was in the back of the store.

Dennis Thomas told 22News he witnessed the accident. “I was coming around the corner and I actually saw what looked very bizarre. Guy taking a left going down the street and lost control and went right up into the restaurant here.”

The cab driver got through the accident without being hurt. He told 22News that another driver had created the accident situation. “He cuts me off, I tried to avoid it, there was no way to avoid in the left lane, I might have lost control of the car.”

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News, they had first thought they’d have to rescue the driver.

Because of the condition of the restaurant, building commissioner Steven Desilets temporarily condemned the restaurant at the corner of State Street and Colonial Avenue. The Health Department will also check out the premises.
