MARLBORO — A Worcester woman and the driver of the vehicle she was in, which hit the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 290 Thursday morning, were taken by medical helicopters to UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus in Worcester with serious injuries.
The names of the 34-year-old woman and the driver of the 1998 Subaru Forester, a 37-year-old man from Haverhill, have not been released by state police.
The three-vehicle accident happened at 9:52 a.m. on I-290 eastbound, just before Interstate 495, near Solomon Pond Mall.
State police said the accident happened after a 2013 Volvo tractor-trailer, driven by a 49-year-old Town, Maine, man, stopped in the left lane as traffic backed up to get onto I-495.
The 1998 Subaru struck the tractor-trailer from behind. Then a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by a 58-year-old man from Charlton struck the Subaru.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The driver of the pickup was slightly hurt and was taken by ambulance to Marlboro Hospital. Their names also were not released by state police.
Eastbound lanes were closed for the Lifeflight and Boston MedFlight helicopters to land and depart.
